This course will introduce participants to the anatomy of the male and female pelvic floor musculature (PFM) and the function of the PFM in relation to the lumbopelvic-hip complex and the abdominal muscles. Participants will practice interview, examination and treatment skills to better address PFM Dysfunction (PFMD) in patients with low back, hip and / or abdominal pain. Real time ultrasound imaging will be available to visualize the action of the PFM; this course does not include any internal PFM examination or treatment.* Patient cases will be discussed to highlight the current evidence and the clinical decision making process to 1) determine if PFMD is present, 2) categorize the type of PFMD and 3) design a comprehensive plan of care that considers the relevant PFMD, including a referral to a specialist if necessary. Participants are encouraged to reflect on your own patients who may have PFMD and to bring questions to share.
*This course is required as a pre-requisite for the more advanced PFMD course that will include internal assessment & treatment.
This course does not have any prereading materials.
