Foundational Upper Extremity Orthoses (formerly Intro to Orthoses) is a hybrid course that provides clinicians with a strong foundation in upper extremity orthotic fabrication, combining online learning modules with an immersive, hands-on lab experience. Participants will gain essential knowledge in material properties, orthotic design principles, and clinical decision-making for common hand and upper extremity diagnoses.
The self-paced online component covers critical anatomical and mechanical principles, material handling techniques, and evidence-based rationale for orthotic interventions. In the live lab, participants will fabricate, fit, and modify nine different orthoses, applying best practices to optimize patient comfort, support healing, and enhance functional outcomes.
Orthoses practiced include:
- PIP Immobilization Orthosis
- DIP Immobilization Orthosis
- Volar Wrist Immobilization Orthosis
- MCP Forearm-Based Immobilization Orthosis
- Volar Wrist/Thumb Immobilization Orthosis
- Volar Hand-Based Thumb Immobilization Orthosis
- Anterior and Posterior Elbow Orthoses
- Relative Motion Orthosis
Through supervised practice and expert instruction, attendees will refine their skills in pattern creation, thermoplastic handling, strapping strategies, and material selection. Emphasis is placed on clinical reasoning, efficient fabrication techniques, and problem-solving to tailor orthoses for a wide range of patient presentations.
Whether you’re new to orthotic fabrication or looking to build confidence and consistency in your techniques, this course equips you with the tools to improve outcomes and expand your impact in upper extremity rehabilitation.
